I Won My First Ever Contest

I can hardly wait to share my joy! I won my first ever contest and got a wonderful prize from Lumene. I never win such things, you know. I belong to the type of people who never get the lucky lottery ticket. So I am very happy the rule is broken! The contest in question was held by Lumene on their Face Book page. You may want to connect with Lumene on Face Book as they promise more fun contests, infos and activities to follow.

I gave my prize to my dear friend in California who has just recently become a US citizen. She received a Lumene package the other day in her mail as a total suprise. Of course she was thrilled! Congratulations once again, Helen! (btw, it's her in the photo above!)

Here are the Lumene goodies, check them out:

- Lumene Vitamin C Age Defying Energy Cocktail
- Lumene Blueberry Curl Mascara
- Lumene Time Freeze Cooling Eye Stick
Plus a couple samples

I hope to get some feedback from Helen on how she likes these products later on! She has already told me that she likes how conveninet it is to apply the soothing and moisturizing stick and that her eyes didn't feel irritated upon application as it happens with other eye products. She doesn't have as much of a problem as I do with eye pufiness but Helen promised to get back to me on how it works for her when she has that extra cup of tea before going to bed.

Beauty Talk: Summer Skin Care Tips for Skin of Color

In the past I was asked several times for recommendations on skin care and makeup for brown skin. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge needed to advise on this particular issue. But experts at Rx For Brown Skin , a brand of skin care specially developed for darker skins, do and they kindly agreed to make a guest post to share their knowledge with readers of Skin Care and Beauty Blog. If you have particular skin concerns you are welcome to ask questions in the comments to this post or send them to my email (beautyhealthinfo at yahoo.com) and I will forward them for you. And now enjoy these useful tips from Anne Thomas, CMO, Rx For Brown Skin.

Skin of color is quite different from white skin in many respects. The most notable differences include more melanin, or brown skin pigment, resulting in a warmer skin shade. Brown Skin women also tend to have fewer visible signs of aging, such as deep wrinkles, fine lines and sun-spots. However, a disadvantage to having more melanin is that it makes brown skin more “reactive.” That means almost any stimulus – a rash, a scratch, pimple, or inflammation – may trigger the production of excess melanin, resulting in hyper-pigmentation, dark marks or patches on the skin. That’s why handling brown skin gently, wearing sunscreen and preventing pigmentation problems are keys to brown skin care.
Listed below are a handful of skin-care tips to keep your brown skin healthy and beautiful this summer:

Photo by Rx For Brown Skin

Treat- Acne often flares when the seasons changes. It is important to realize that acne is not caused by dirt or dirty skin but rather bacteria, oil, plugged pores and elevated hormone levels each contributes to acne. Rubbing and scrubbing your skin will actually worsen your acne. Instead, simply washing acne prone skin very gently twice a day will improve the acne by 20 to 30 percent. For an example of a gentle cleanser, take a look at Rx For Brown Skin Bright and Healthy Ultra-Gentle Cleanser . This product was specially developed to mildly cleanse, hydrate and protect brown skin.

Photo by Its Jo Jo at flickr.com

Prevent- With the active lives women lead we should all be taking a supplement however, woman of color needs to pay particular attention to certain deficiencies. A, B, C or D. Which vitamins are many women of color deficient in? Scientific studies have demonstrated that many African American, Latina and some Asian women are deficient in Vitamin D. This vitamin is produced by your skin in conjunction with sunlight but the increased melanin pigment in skin of color hampers its production. A vitamin supplement with calcium and vitamin D will ensure bone health and boost your immune system.

Protect- Sunscreen is a summer time must have for brown skin. You may not have realized it but skin of color often sunburns, it can develop deadly skin cancer and dark marks and discolorations will worsen all because of exposure to the sun’s rays. An ounce of prevention (using sunscreen daily) is worth a pound of cure. Choose wide spectrum sunscreen, that will protect you from both ultraviolet UVA and UVB rays, like Protect and Defend Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 15
Ask us any question you have related to brown skin-care and we will answer them in our next Guest post on the blog :-)

Beauty Buy: Clinique Moisture Glove and Talika Eye Decompress Masks

Was shopping again and here is what I bought yesterday!

*Clinique Water Therapy Moisture Glove Hand Cream
I have to confess, I don't pay due attention to my hands. No matter how hard I try to develop a habit to apply hand cream at least 2 times a day I manage only once. I also can’t develop a habit of applying sunscreen on my hands before I go out (any suggestions?!). So it comes as no surprise that it took me a couple weeks to get around to buying a new hand cream after I ran out. As usual, I planned on one product and ended up buying another. Instead of Sally Hansen 18 Hour Protective Hand Crème at the last moment I got a hand cream by Clinique. I’ve heard good things about Water Therapy line from Clinique so I got Clinique Water Therapy Moisture Glove Hand Cream. I will be reviewing it in a couple of weeks.

*Talika Eye Decompress Masks
My next purchase was Talika Eye Decompress Masks. I have discovered this mask just about a month ago. It is excellent against eye puffiness! I have already posted on the ways to fight eye puffiness. The fight is never over and I'm looking for new effective products all the time. Seldom do I find something that works but (hurray!) Talika Eye Decompress Masks do! Stay tuned for my full review with details on ingredients and more photos.

I also got a sample of Talika Vital Oil that promises to calm and sooth sensitive skin. I’m always interested in trying out sensitive skin products even though my skin has been on really good behavior for quite some time now. What I can say now about Talika Vital Oil is that the smell is quite strng and a bit unusual… More details coming later!

Beauty Review: Shiseido Perfect Rouge

Packaging:
Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to enjoy Shiseido Perfect Rouge sleek modern case - I’ve been trying out Shiseido Perfect Rouge samples that I got when I bought Shiseido Hydro-Powder. You can see it on the photo above. If you look from the top, you will recognize the shape of Shiseido logo.

Shade:
RD514 – Dragon – dramatic blood red
BE208 – Baby – warm beige
PK417 – Bubblegum – Bright warm pink
PK307 – Tourmaline – Clear, soft grey pink
It’s very nicely pigmented!

Scent:
No scent

Stay-on Power:
It’s not super lasting but it stays on for several hours. After having a drink it’s gone or almost gone and you obviously need to reapply it. But the red shade is especially durable, it was there even after I had a desert.

Texture and finish:
Has nice light and creamy texture. Shiseido Perfect Rouge contains some moisturizing ingredients like Macadamia Seed oil, so it feels comfortable and not at all drying on the lips.
Gives satiny finish with no sparkle or shimmer just a touch of gloss.

Experience:
Let me go shade by shade

PK307: Out of the 4 shades I tried I liked Tourmaline the most. Funny, but if I saw PK307 at Shiseido counter, it would not be my first choice to even swatch. It doesn’t look anything special, just subtle soft pink. But thanks to the sample I had a chance to try and appreciate this shade. PK307 without being too bright, makes lips stand out on your face. It’s such a complementing shade, my skin seems to get some kind of glow when I’m wearing it. It makes lips look plumper and more luscious. Perfect!!

PK417: I did not like this pink shade of Bubblegum PK417. It looked too bright neon pink on me.

BE208: When I posted about Shiseido Makeup Collection Spring 2009 , I thought this will be my color of choice if I buy Shiseido Perfect Rouge Lipstick. But susprise surprise! This slightly pink beige nude doesn’t look good. The color is just dull and it looks strange on the lips.
RD415: When I put Perfect Rouge in Dragon on, my husband said I looked as if I have just eaten a piece of raw meat… and that he actually liked how this lipstick looks on me. Men know how to make compliments, don’t they!?
The color of RD415 is truly dramatic blood red. It will draw everybody's attention to your lips. You cannot do much with the eyes if you are wearing RD415, just wear a mascara. I gravitate toward more subtle colors but do sometimes enjoy a different look. This lipstick would be perfect for a sophisticated sexy red lip look. But maybe it is too bright for me? What do you think?

It looks darker on this photo becuase I'm not in the light. But you can really see how intense it is.

Bottom Line:
What I liked most about Shiseido Perfect Rouge is the texture and finish. I liked very much Tourmaline PK 307 but am not sure I'm ready to buy another pink lipstick :-) Am still thinking about it! I'm very attracted to Dragon RD415 so I am considering buying it for my blood red lipstick look.

Beauty Talk: Topical Wrinkle Fillers

If you are not yet ready for injectable wrinkle fillers, explore topical products that promise the same effect.

Currently there is a big choice of wrinkle filling creams on the market that offer not only visual correction but provide positive anti-aging effect on your skin as well.

What's inside? Usually fillers are based on silicon or collagen, or both. In addition, fillers tend to contain light diffusing particles to intensify a smoothing effect. They can also contain hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring substance found in dermis that fills the space between collagen and elastin fibers. Hyaluronic acid effectively attracts and retains moisture making skin plump and supple.

How do they work? When you apply a wrinkle filler, silicone settles on top of the skin filling wrinkles in and minimizing their appearance. At the same time, collagen, even though it’s molecule is quite big, can get deeper into the skin and Hyaluronic Acid, in its turn, penetrates, deep into epidermis. Both collagen and Hyaluronic Acid attract and absorb water and help to smooth and plump up those lines from the inside.

Wrinkle fillers? You must be joking! Photo by JRemsikjr at flickr.com

How to apply? Wrinkle fillers are applied after a daily moisturizer before foundation. Some fillers can be applied all over the face, while others need precise targeted application directly on a wrinkle. The latter come in a specially designed package with a pointed applicator. Apply fillers with light tapping motions.

Pros and Cons: While wrinkle fillers have some definite benefits such as an immediate smoothing effect, they also have some downsides. For example, trying to layer a wrinkle filler can actually result in the product just peeling off or turning into crumbs. Due to their matte texture, some fillers can be quite visible on the skin. Also some people find wrinkle fillers too thick and slippery. So if you want to give wrinkle fillers a try, keep all of these points in mind when shopping for a product.

Consider these wrinkle smoothing products:
Clarins Lisse Minute Base Comblante
Olay Wrinkle Fill and Seal
L’Oreal De Crease Collagen Filler Wrinkle
Dior Capture R60/80 Filler
Estee Lauder Correcting Concentrate for Lips Lines
Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler range
Good Skin Labs TriAktiline Instant Deep Wrinkle Filler

Beauty Review: Clarins Eclat Minute Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base

Promise:
Facilitates make-up application and promotes lasting wear

Packaging:
Comes in a convenient pen with a brush

Shade:
Clarins Eclat Minute is available in only one shade 00 which is very light pink with beige undertones

Application:
You can apply Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base on the eye lid using the brush it comes with. Very convenient to get close to eye lashes or reach the eye corner. You can also just use your finger.

Stay-on Power:
Stays on long and is crease resistant!

Cover Power:
Excellent! It just lights up the eye area.

Texture:
Very similar to liquid foundation but a bit thicker. Not oily and not slippery

Experience:
This is my first experience with an eye perfecting product or an eye shadow base. I used liquid foundation to even the tone on my eye lids before… At times I wouldn’t use anything at all, but now I’m converted. How on Earth could I have lived without an eye shadow base? Anyone explain to me!

Initially I planned to buy Guerlain Eye Shadow Base from spring makeup collection 2009 but they didn’t have it available here. So without much prior research I just went for Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base. It did not disappoint me but I may sound a bit too critical since it’s my first experience and I don’t have much to compare to.

Starting off with big pluses, Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base has nice not oily texture and it does not irritate my quite sensitive eyes!

I apply Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base on the eye lid using the brush it comes with. It’s very convenient to get close to eye lashes or into the eye corner. Then tapping with my finger I blend it all over the eye lid. It is a bit thicker than liquid foundation, so I’m always careful not to tag at the tender eye skin. I actually like the way it applies evenly all over the lid and it doesn’t take too much effort to spread it and blend it into the skin.

I think it's obvious which eye has Clarins base on it

I love how well Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base covers darkness of the skin on my eyelids and on the side of the nose at the inner eye corner. It makes not only my eye area light up but my whole face looks brighter and more awake. Very often I don’t even apply eye shadow over it. I just put on mascara, lip gloss and I’m ready to face the world! It creates a great canvass for eye shadow application. To see what difference this base can make I would experiment with applying it on one eye only and then applying eye shadow on both eye lids. I have to say that the colors and the whole look is so much better on the eye with the base!

You can also use Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base on under eye circles. But it’s a bit too thick for this so I prefer YSL Touche Eclat.

Now I’m going to be a bit picky… I’m not completely satisfied with the way it looks on the skin. It has this powdery finish to it. I wish it looked more smooth on the skin.

I have also tested Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base for the promised “promotion of lasting makeup wear” and am not sure how effective it is. As mentioned above, before applying eye shadow I would apply Clarins base only on one lid and, trying not to think of how ridiculous I looked, I spent the whole day like this. Late in the evening I would closely inspect the result in the mirror. I didn’t see any difference at all between the eye with the base and the eye without when I used Shiseido Hydro-Powder (excellent eye shadow!!!). I noticed only very slight difference in creasing in favor of Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base with a powder shadow by Estee Lauder.

Bottom Line:
I like Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base, I would recommend it but to form final opinion I need to try some other eye shadow base to be able to compare.

Beauty Buzz: New Sisley Perfume Eau de Sisley 1, 2 & 3

Sisley unlike many other brands rolling out new perfumes every year or even every other month, Sisley takes its own slow pace and releases a new fragrance every 10-15 years. I am under a strong impression that if Sisley launches something, it is genius and has taken years of development. In one of the interviews Hubert d'Ornano, founder/owner of the brand said "We launch when we have something special to launch. We don't launch for the sake of launching." Up till now Sisley have had only three perfumes. That's why I was very surprised to see Sisley recently come out not with one but with a trio of brand new perfumes.
Not much time was spent on creating names for the new perfumes called Eau de Sisley 1, 2 & 3. The reason for this as Sisley explains is that they want to give a chance to perfume owners to use imagination and creativity and name each fragrance from the new trio themselves.

Eau de Sisley 1- A sun kissed dress. Described as “joyful, romantic and tender”. Top notes: citrus, berries with a touch of spice (Tangerine, Grapefruit, pink Berries, Spice); heart notes: Jasmine, green Tea, Juniper Berries, base notes: Chypre from the Hesperides, Musk.

Eau de Sisley 2 - A white sundress dotted with green has luminous, lively and cheerful character. Top notes: Cardamon, Bergamot, Basil; heart notes: water lily, Jasmine, Cyclamen and Rose; base notes: Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedar and Sandalwood.

Eau de Sisley 3 - A seductive dress offering teasing, aloof and impulsive fragrance. Top notes: Bergamot, Tangerine, Grapefruit, and Tangy Lemon; hear notes: Ginger, Chinese Osmanthus flower, Peach and Apricot; base notes: Patchouli, Vetiver, Benjamin, Vanilla, and Musk

Polish sculptor Bronislaw Krzysztof designed the caps for Eau de Sisley 1, 2 & 3 bottles. He also created the caps for Sisley’s other perfumes - Eau du Soir and Soir de Lune.

Beauty Review: Mavala Cuticle Cream

Promise:
Softens the skin surrounding the nail providing a neat and cared for nail contour

What’s Inside:
Lanolin, Petrolatum, Water, Mineral Oil, Alcohol Denat, Metyhylparaben, Butylparaben, Chlorphenesin, Triclosan, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamaldehyde, 2-Propionaldehyde, Coumarin, Geraniol etc.

As I can see it includes some emollients and occlusives like Lanolin, Petrolatum and Mineral Oil which will moisturize the cuticle and keep moisture locked in. Mavala Cuticle Cream also provides protection against bacteria and fungi with Chlorphenesin and Triclosan. In addition, there is a bunch of preservatives and fragrance ingredients.

Experience:
Texture: creamy, oily and very thick just like an ointment
Smell: smells like medicine but not bad
Absorption: Absorbs pretty fast

Modern tempo of life doesn’t always allow time to do regular manicures. Malava cuticle cream is a savior in such situations. You can also use this cream to make your manicure last longer. I personally found Malava cuticle cream very effective.
Malava Cream comes with a manicure stick and you are instructed to push back cuticles after applying and massaging in the cuticle cream. I don’t always use the stick and still it works its magic. I usually apply Malava cuticle cream just before going to bed. When used on long cuticle, I can see it pull way back already the next morning.

It’s a good product! If you keep to a regular routine of applying it every day you will have a good result!

Price Time:
Only 9-10$

Makeup Tip: Defining Eyebrows

Just came across an easy tip from Bobbi Brown for natural looking defined eyebrows.

Choose a shade matching your natural brow color. Brush your brows down, this way you will see the line to fill in. Fill in white spaces using selected color with a brow brush/pencil. Blend. Now just brush your brows upwards again and the correction line won’t be noticeable.

Check out these products for shaping and defining eyebrows.

I'm using Lancome Sourcils Design Superfine Automatic Brow Pencil. Like it alot! What's your favorite?

Beauty Fact: Red Enhances Men's Attraction To Women

Now we have one more reason to wear red lipstick. And this time it’s scientifically supported!

A study by two University of Rochester psychologists looked at a relationship between color and behavior. It was revealed that the color red makes men feel more attracted to women.

In the course of the study researchers analyzed men’s responses to photographs of women under a variety of color presentations. In one experiment, for example, men looked at women’s photos framed in red or white and answered various questions regarding woman’s appearance and attractiveness. In the final study, woman’s shirt in the picture was digitally colored red or blue. In this experiment, men were also asked about their intentions regarding dating. In all of the experiments, the women shown framed by or wearing red were rated significantly more attractive and sexually desirable by men than the exact same women shown with other colors. Amazing but men are completely unaware of the role the color plays in their attraction. Andrew Elliot, professor of psychology says, "It's fascinating to find that something as ubiquitous as color can be having an effect on our behavior without our awareness."

By the way, the “red effect” extends only to males and only to perceptions of attractiveness.

One more interesting fact. The authors of this study note that men's response to red may stem from deep biological roots. According to research male primates are noticed to be particularly attracted to females displaying red. Female baboons and chimpanzees, for example, redden when close to ovulation, sending a clear sexual message designed to attract males. This could mean that human males’ attraction to red has subconscious animal instincts to it.
Hmmm… so now what do you think about society’s infatuation with red? Red hearts at St.Valentine’s, red lipstick, Red Lights Districts and red lingerie? I bet, red will always be in fashion ;-)
