Beauty Controversy: Sperm Has Anti-Aging Effect On The Skin

What only won’t you slather on your skin in the hope of becoming younger and more beautiful, right!? Oops, wait! Maybe there are limits to the weird stuff we put on our faces. What about recent discoveries revealing that sperm can effectively fight free radicals and have an anti-aging effect on the skin. Some time ago I came across an article in Cosmo (May 2010) talking about the new “wonder drug”. Scientists call it Spermidine – we call it just sperm. It appears, that in addition to semen being effective against depression when absorbed through the walls of vagina, it also increases lifespan of human immune cells. Studies also show that it acts as a powerful antioxidant protecting your skin from destructive free radicals. Guess what… a couple spas are already offering spermidine facials. Thanks God the sperm is not donated by guys from the street but is created synthetically. Finally, according to Cosmo there are already spermidine creams available on the market. Really? Any examples?

Beauty Controversy: Do Pentapeptides Actually Work?

Pentapeptides are believed to be able to penetrate into deeper skin layers and not only make your skin firmer but also to reduce appearance of wrinkles.

But do they really work? Recently Olay Regenerist skin cream that boasts of containing anti-aging pentapeptides got under scrutiny by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)(UK). The ad for Olay Regenerist claims that a study presented at the World Congress of Dermatology showed that “pentapeptides are effective in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles”. ASA launched its own investigation and concluded that the scientific paper mentioned in the ad actually did not have sufficient evidence to support the claim. In fact, in the study submitted by Procter & Gamble to ASA the majority of test subjects reported no effect!
It’s all in the wording. Unfortunately, advertisers often word information about a product in a way that misleads the consumer. Wouldn’t you agree that the only mention of the World Congress of Dermatology adds certain authority to the anti-aging promises of Olay Regenerist?

The bottom line: Have a critical mind and don’t trust ads easily!

New anti-ageing treatment that claims to be permanent, unlike muscle relaxers and fillers, is currently under development by a British biomedical company Intercytex. It is called Vavelta and is made from a clear liquid derived from babies’ foreskins. The liquid contains fibroblasts and is injected into skin to treat signs of ageing, burns and acne scars. Fibroblast cells “rejuvenate and revitalize damaged, aging skin from the inside by actually repopulating the lower skin layers with millions of healthy young skin cells” – writes nydailynews.com.

Vavelta is under clinical trials but there is a lot of excitement going on around it already. Dermatologists like the idea of injecting collagen producing cells into the skin instead of collagen itself and it is called by some "one step after stem cell”. However according to some estimations it may be still 3-4 years till we see Vavelta anti-ageing treatment on the market.

The treatment is also a bit controversial as some people are appauled with the idea of using a human body part, especially coming from a baby, to manufacture this treatment. So the question is: would you use Vavelta to treat wrinkles knowing what it is made of??
