I agree! New spring makeup collections are out and I’m determined to get something nice this time! I have been on a strict budget past autumn-winter as I’ve been doing some redecoration work on a room. I didn’t buy anything from the past holiday collections and limited editions… sigh… I wanted Guerlain Butterfly collection, especially that Sublime Radiant Powder, so bad…

As a result of such “makeup diet”, I am “starving” now and ready to shop. So for the next several posts I will take a look at the new makeup collections and looks for spring 2009! I’m already drawn to Guerlain (again!) or maybe Givenchy... But we’ll see!

Perfume Review: Ageless Fantasy

Ahhh… Youth… to what lengths don’t we go to look younger… All the sophisticated creams we religiously use, all the lifting, light reflecting, contouring makeup we apply, even the plastic surgery we resort to in despair… In our endeavors to reverse the time we overlook something very obvious that’s right under our noses – figuratively and literally speaking. The way we smell! That’s right, the essence of youth is not limited to the way we look…it is not only how young we feel and act… it’s also how young we smell. How is that you ask? Smell is a very important sense of perception. Any smell is a message which immediately gets deciphered by the brain (on conscious or unconscious level) and can trigger a certain reaction or emotion. As we age, the body starts to produce a chemical known as "noneal", “which occurs as a result of the chemical breakdown of a fatty acid known as palmitoleic in the skin.” As a result of the complicated chemical process triggered by "noneal" skin emits an unpleasant greasy odor that experts say is the natural "body odor" scent of aging. Armed with this information and research findings on scents associations, Harvey Prince set out on a search for a formula for the Fountain of Youth. As a result Ageless Fantasy was born, the first anti-aging perfume ever.

So what is the secret of Ageless Fantasy? How does it manage to rewind the years and make you seem younger? To turn back time Ageless Fantasy had not only to “mask” the “scent of aging” but also to send the brain a message of youth, vitality and joy. Several studies, including the one conducted by Harvey Prince, showed that citrus fragrances effectively counteract the “scent of aging” and are strongly associated with youth, energy and vitality. While rose and lavender, for example, are on the contrary associated with the scent of an “old lady”. Other findings proved that tropical flavors of pineapple, mango and leafy greens bring a "feeling of comfort often associated with positive childhood memories, thus giving a sense of coziness, youth and joy". Pink grapefruit combined with antioxidant rich pomegranate achieves "powerful euphoric properties, sets off a feeling of youth and excitement". Based on these findings Harvey Prince developed the first anti-aging perfume Ageless Fantasy. Research proves that women wearing the perfume are perceived on an average 8 years younger!

I was looking forward to experiencing this fragrance since its launch at the end of 2008 and to prevent any influence on my perception I tried to stay away from reading reviews on Ageless Fantasy. But whatever information I did consume made me expect a cool fragrance with cold leading citrus notes. So my first thought when I breathed in Ageless Fantasy was that it is not at all cold… it is quite hot! With the first breath your senses are hit with a wave of tropical cocktail - the Top Notes of mango, apple, pink grapefruit, pomegranate, and pineapple. When you breathe it in again, you feel some lightly spicy notes that refresh your senses, seem to tease you and make you want breathe it in again to feel those tropicals again. These are the Base Notes of precious woods and musk. You also feel florals which become more obvious and seductive on your skin with some time. The floral Heart Notes include cherry blossom, pink jasmine lily of the valley & peony.

Note, all of the compounds have their special mission: tropical notes bring the positive childhood associations and give the feeling of youth and joy. Cherry blossom and pink jasmine have a calming, relaxing effect. Lily of the valley & peony trigger happy emotions, heighten feelings of life satisfaction and excitement. The feeling of euphoria comes from the combination of pink grapefruit and pomegranate. Even though Ageless Fantasy is a very complicated scent, has many floral compounds it is not too sweet, too heavy or overwhelming… it is light and warm. I love this combination!

I liked the fragrance a lot. My husband told me I smelt yummi ;-) (read “sexy”). And tonight, is the night to use the charms and powers of Ageless Fantasy to the full! ;-) Happy (and passionate) St.Valentine’s Day!

We always want more from our beauty products so in response to demand more and more products-multitaskers hit the market. The most recent one combines lipgloss and appetite suppressing extract of hoodia in one!

Celebrity Beauty: Best and Worst Dressed at Grammys 2009

I didn’t have a chance to watch Grammy Awards show, so the first thing I did in the morning is check out all available red carpets photo albums online.

Here are my favorite looks… followed by what-were-they-thinking ones!

1. Carrie Underwood wearing gold beaded dress by Zuhair Murad looked glamorous and glowing with beauty. Nice combination of the gold dress, blond hair and tanned skin.

2. I am not a huge fan of asymmetrical dresses very seldom but this one worn by Sheryl Crow did impress me! Sheryl looked stunning in this gown by Toni Maticevski.

3. Loved this beautiful burst of pink on the red carpet. Letoya Luckett looked tall, sexy and glamorous in this mini dress. And the multi-color snakeskin envelope clutch was the best accessory choice.

4. I think the best elegant gown was worn by Taylor Swift. This black dress with wrap around leather strapping is by Kaufman Franc. I also liked Taylor’s hair and makeup!

GIPSY GIRL: Tanned skin is a BIG trend for the upcoming spring/summer 2009. This year it is matte and ruddy brown. Nars makeup artist Ayako describes the look as “a gipsy girl who’s naturally weathered”. (Harper’s Bazar Jan 09)

BLUSH: Blush fans rejoice – models were blushing at many spring 2009 runway shows! Choose a peach blush which will make you look a bit made-up without looking too girly. Or just blush to your heart contents. Check out these looks below.

HIGHLIGHT: Another trend is highlighted cheek bones. Love the look! Makeup artist Bobbi Brown recommends: to avoid looking washed out, layer icy shimmer on top of blush to create cool, polished face. Just the way she did at J.Mendel show.

DEWY SKIN: Another hot trend for spring/summer 2009 is dewy borderline sweaty looking skin.

STATEMENT in RED: Make a statement with red! This is a definite trend color for lips for spring 2009. Just choose your favorite shade. Will it be strawberry red like at Thakoon or tomato red as seen at Proenza Schouler. Note, glossy red seems to be the favorite as seen at Thakoon, Michael Kors and Luis Vuiton.


Here is how makeup artist Dick Page did red lips at Michael Kors: line lips with Shiseido Makeup Smoothing Pencil in Siren (20$) and top it off with Perfect Rouge Lipstick in Dragon (25$), pair bold lips with lightly bronzed skin. (Haper’s Bazaar Jan 2009)

EYELINER: Eyeliner really stands-out as a trend for eyes for spring/summer 2009. Models at Lanvin, YSL, Narciso Rodriguez, Stella McCartney, Just Cavalli all wore eyeliner. Check out these looks below with smudged liquid eyeliner at Lanvin, a cat eye on the background of a neutral face at YSL, eyes rimmed with black pencil at Just Cavalli.


GILDED GODDESS: Another popular look for spring/summer 2009 is gilded goddess as seen at Monique Lhuillier, Missoni, Baby Phat and Peter Som.


To create an elegant gilded goddess look at Monique Lhuillier, makeup artist Val Garland avoided bronzing cheeks and “gilded eyelids with MAC PRO Pigment in Golden Lemon, added a swipe of bronze below the eye”. If you are nervous about going too glitzy, makeup artist McGrath who created Peter Som look for spring 2009, recommends highlighting with gold only the inner corners of the eyes. GOLD SMOKY EYE: Gold and bronze colors are also used to create popular for this season dramatic but softer smoky eye as seen at Dsquared2, Versace and Oscar de la Renta.


PLAY WITH COLOR: You were looking forward to the summer to play with some colors? Check out the aquatic look at Gucci, lilac and blue glam-rock eyes at Temperley and salmon eyelids at Alexander Herchcovitch.


BIG BROWS: The big bold brows are again a trend this season.

Beauty News: Tanning Drug Approved for Clinical Trial

Did you hear about a drug that makes you tanned?

A drug that stimulates melanin production and turns skin caramel for up to two months has received U.S. government approval to begin clinical trials.

A man made hormone called afamelanotide is injected into the skin to stimulate tanning. The drug is being developed as a treatment for patients whose health due to rare genetic disorders is endangered by sun's rays.

Even though it has not yet been approved for tanning, a similar unlicensed product under a very descriptive name Melanotan II based on a similar compound, has become available from online retailers and is gaining popularity. American and British officials are concerned that use of this drug can cause serious short-term and long-term health problems. For example, a recent research has proved that injecting this compound into skin can cause a change in size and shape of moles which could be precursor to skin cancer.

What makes Melanotan II even more popular is that in addition to tanning, it also appears to produce aphrodisiac and erectile function effects.

Celebrity Beauty: Best and Worst Dressed at SAG Awards

It was kind of hard for me to get very excited about any celebrity look at SAG Awards last Sunday. But I did have a couple favorite ones. Here they are:


I am not a fan of much ruching but this dress by Dolce & Gabbana looks beautiful Roasario Dawson. This is my favorite dress from SAG awards.


I really like this coral gown on Laura Linney. The whole look with loosely tousled hair and the floor long, one-shouldered Michael Kors gown looks perfect.


I like this Greek style beautiful white Azzaro gown with crystal-embellished neckline and belt. Anne Hathaway looks gorgeous!

Below are the dress choices that are obviously a mistake!

I like Tari Hatcher! But in this dress by Monique Lhuillier she looks like a doll in wrapping paper.

What was Eva Longoria thinking when she chose this dress for the awards. To me it looks like a bad (rented in a local store) choice for a prom.


Does this dress look familiar? Take a look at Angelina's outfit at Golden Globes - it looks quite similar. As E-Online mentioned, perhaps Angelina's dress choices (all by Max Azria) are silent protest against attending awards shows. Why does she show up then?

The ingredients list resembles Verite Calming Fluid. As I can see, Verite Moisture Relief Cream contains the same soothing/anti-inflammatory extracts and anti-oxidants like Green Tea Extract, Caffeine, Hydrocotyl Extract, Matricaria Chamomilla (type of chamomile). In terms of keeping your skin moisturized, the cream contains great ingredients to restore and keep up skin’s protective barrier, like Ceramide and Cholesterol, as well as several ingredients that serve to attract and lock moisture in the skin such as Butylene Glycol and Glycerin - humectants (attract moisture to skin), Squalane - great emollient (softens, conditions the skin), Dimethicone- occlusive (creates an occlusive layer over the skin to keep the moisture in).

Experience

Texture: white, quite thick cream
Smell: no smell

In the description of the product Estee Lauder implies that Verite Moisture Relief Cream is mostly for the skin that tends to be dry. However, it can be used by all skin types. Usually I am very suspicious of “All Skin Types” products, and often rightly so as I get break outs. But Verite Moisture Relief Cream was great for my mixed skin. Texture seems at first quite thick. But when you apply the cream it kind of melts and very quickly gets absorbed. I also hate it when moisturizer is too occlusive and you can feel a film mask on your skin after application. It is not the case with Verite Moisture Relief Cream! It gives you thatnice velvety finish, skin immediately feels soft , moisturized and comfortable (I don’t want to sound like and ad but it’s true!). Redness also subsides with regular use.

The combination of Verite Calming Fluid and Verite Moisture Relief Cream is ideal for sensitive skin that needs that extra help to sooth persistent redness or to regenerate. If your skin is sensitive but you don’t have much redness/irritation, Verite Moisture Relief Cream alone should be enough. That’s how I am using it now and I like the results.

Beauty Controversy: Using Foreskin from Circumcised New Borns for Anti-Ageing

New anti-ageing treatment that claims to be permanent, unlike muscle relaxers and fillers, is currently under development by a British biomedical company Intercytex. It is called Vavelta and is made from a clear liquid derived from babies’ foreskins. The liquid contains fibroblasts and is injected into skin to treat signs of ageing, burns and acne scars. Fibroblast cells “rejuvenate and revitalize damaged, aging skin from the inside by actually repopulating the lower skin layers with millions of healthy young skin cells” – writes nydailynews.com.

Vavelta is under clinical trials but there is a lot of excitement going on around it already. Dermatologists like the idea of injecting collagen producing cells into the skin instead of collagen itself and it is called by some "one step after stem cell”. However according to some estimations it may be still 3-4 years till we see Vavelta anti-ageing treatment on the market.

The treatment is also a bit controversial as some people are appauled with the idea of using a human body part, especially coming from a baby, to manufacture this treatment. So the question is: would you use Vavelta to treat wrinkles knowing what it is made of??

Beauty Find: Clarisonic. What’s all the hype about?

When you hear alot about a product, is it because the product is great and everyone is talking about it? Or is it simply because the company is investing in marketing? Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference.

Clarisonic is a hand held device with a brush for cleansing skin. Brushing and sensitive skin don't really go together, so I have been just ignoring all the hype and not really paying attention to the rave reviews about this product. But today I read that Clarisonic Skin Care System actually includes a special brush for sensitive skin. This and the fact that Clarisonic is one of Oprah’s favorite products inspired me to look into more details.

According to its manufacturer, the Clarisonic System “helps remove six times more makeup than soap and water alone”. Maybe this thing could be useful for my sensitive skin after all?

What people love about Clarisonic is that
- it is waterproof and you can take it to the shower
- you can control the intensity and use it on sensitive skin
- it unclogs pores
- makes skin soft, smooth and even erases some lines
- it comes with three cleansers: Gentle Hydro Cleanser, Refreshing Gel Cleanser, Nourishing Care Cleanser

It is quite expensive. But if, like me, you don’t get professional facials too often, it maybe a good investment!

So, what I want to know is if anyone out there has used this product? Is it as wonderful as everyone says? It is worth the investment?

Since I do not have a tattoo, I didn’t have any idea that there is a need for special tattoo care. It appears, however, tattoos do need some maintenance. They tend to fade or blur with years and need to be refreshed. What contributes to this fading a lot is the sun and free radicals that damage skin cells caring ink pigment. So this week a special skin care line for tattoos was launched in New York called Inkguard.

But is it special? According to the manufacturer, Tattoo defender has UV screen of SPF 30+ and Tattoo Enhancer contains “most potent” anti-oxidants. The “most-potent” anti-oxidants are green-tea, pomegranate, cocoa, carrot, coffee, Vitamin E, D, A.


Well… to me, it looks like another anti-oxidant moisturizer and another sun screen.

I love this product! It is immediately absorbed into the skin. If your skin felt burning or irritated, it delivers immediate relief and your skin feels soft and balanced. With regular and constant use redness subsides and skin looks smoother and healthier. Attention: Even though it says “fluid” on this product it acts more like a serum and needs to be followed up by a moisturizer.
